Call for crafters: The Streets of Indian Lake weekly event - Hendersonville

New venture in Hendersonville:
The event takes place each Saturday at "The Streets of Indian Lake" between Barnes and Noble and September's Cafe in the court yard area of the shopping complex.
Artisans/Vendor's can sign up for one weekend or several weekends or all weekends available. The event runs through October.
The cost is $25.00 for each Saturday event. Artisans/Vendors can share a booth and the entry fee.
There have been two weekends so far with much success and several folks sold out of goods and products!
No items of jewelry or purses are allowed in the booths/tents as the shops at "The Streets of Indian Lake" sell jewelry and purses.
Artworks, clay, stuffed animals, tie dye, textiles, various other arts and crafts, and home grown veggies and fruits and honey, etc... are allowed. There is electricity available. Vendors/Artisans must supply their own tent.

Join Joseph Whitt at our next Artist's Forum as he discusses the thoughts and processes behind his work.

Whitt is an honors graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and has taught classes in visual arts at Middle Tennessee State University and New College of Florida, Sarasota. He lives in New York City, and is currently the curator and events programmer at Starr Space, artist Jules de Balincourt's Brooklyn-based performance art venue.

His latest project, Serenades, is built on a series of trades with a highly personal pantheon of artistic heroes, including Nick Currie (a.k.a. Momus), Casey Spooner of Fischerspooner, Drew Daniel of Matmos, and others.

New Pottery Cooperative in Nashville

Potters, Clay Artists and others interested in creating with fired clay:

A new Pottery Cooperative is looking for a few more members - enough to keep costs down, but not so many we have to wait to use equipment. Long hours of access to building and studio daily.

Starting July 1 we will have a building in downtown (4th @ Elm). It has free parking, lots of space and an excess of creative energy from the other artists in the building. You will have access to open areas outside the pottery studio. Very social atmosphere. Wireless internet is provided, as well as opportunities to participate in shows.

I have 1 potters wheel and 2 kilns plus lots of other tools and equipment.
We will acquire more if needed later. This is just starting and we can make up the rules as we go.

Please contact me as soon as possible if you may be interested as we will have our 1st meeting Thursday, June 11.

The Beehive Design Collective -a group of artist activists based in Maine- travels the U.S. and abroad engaging communities in a dialogue about pressing socio-politico-environmental issues of the day through their intricate large-scale graphic works and accompanying presentations (aka narrative picture-lectures). All research for the murals is done first-hand, which means months or more spent in an area, collaborating with communities, listening to their stories and interpreting them visually. ART.EDU is a showcasing of Nashville’s newest talent, artists emerging from art-driven academic programs. All students earning (completing) MFA, MA, BA, or BFA degrees in 2008, 2009, & 2010 at Nashville area colleges and Universities are eligible, including those from Appalachain Center for Crafts, Art Institute of Tennessee, Belmont University, Fisk University, Lipscomb University, Middle Tennessee State University, Nossi College of Art, O’More College of Design, Tennessee State University, The University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, and Watkins College of Art & Design. All media is welcome, including all digital, fashion, performance, installation, and traditional 2-D and 3-D artwork.

All artwork must have been completed in the 12 months leading to the artist’s degree completion. Only 5 artworks maximum are allowed per artist submission. Only 10 images maximum are allowed per artist submission. Each image should be numbered to correspond with the information pertaining to it in the Image Information/Checklist. All images must be in JPEG or TIFF format and be no larger than 15mb in file size each. The Artist Statement should be one page or shorter (Word .doc file preferred). Please include the Image Information/Checklist and Artist Statement as 2 files attached to the email in addition to being typed in the body of the email.

Submissions will be accepted beginning May 15th and are due by June 12th at 5pm, no exceptions. It is free to submit work to ART.EDU. Artists are required to pay a $40.00 exhibition fee upon acceptance. ART.EDU opens Friday, July 31st and runs until closing night, Friday, August 14th.

Be a part of an art installation - Send your Trashy Clothing!

I am creating an installation at the new Blend Studio Art Gallery at the Arcade in Nashville. This installation is to bring awareness for the need of textile recycling in America. We are a country of stuff and often just throw it away only to fill our landfills. There are recycling programs for plastic, glass, aluminum but rarely do you see one for textiles. According to the Council for Textile Recycling every American on average throws away 68 pounds of fabric each year!

How can you help?? I am collecting used clothing, in any condition (dirty, with holes, it does not matter) from as many people as possible. Each piece will be labeled with the name and location of the person who donates it. All the pieces will then be stitched together to create one large installation art piece bringing awareness to this problem. I would love to get at least one piece from everyone! Come on you know you have an old shirt, skirt or pants hanging in that closet that you don't want.
After the installation, and some before, all the fabric from the items will be sewn into new items that will be sold at local galleries and shops. The money raised will be sent to Kiva. An organization that helps people of poverty survive. I have selected a lady who is a weaver with 5 children making $3 a day and her husband makes $2 a day recycling. Kiva creates a loan for the family that they will pay back. They are wanting to purchase a bike for the husband to deliver the recycling he collects. The family lives in Cambodia. Some money will also be used to help local schools with recycling programs. And who knows what other great things we will accomplish!

Send me your trashy clothes today!! One shirt in a small mailer envelope should cost about $2 to ship. And you can be a part of this great project!
All envelopes will be reused.
A website will be up and running soon so that you can follow the progress. Drop off sites will also be available if you have lots of clothing to donate.

This position provides support in all aspects of the Arts Education program and reports to the Director of Arts Education. While providing management assistance and coordination of existing programs is part of this position, the Commission is interested in individuals who wish to actively contribute new and innovative ideas to its arts education programming. The Nashville Association of Art Dealers (NAAD) presents a new opprotunity for art lovers and patrons to explore Nashville’s diverse and growing art scene. "Art After Hours" - Nashville’s first monthly, city-wide art crawl - seeks to elevate awareness and support for the visual arts in Nashville. On the first Thursday of each month participating galleries will remain open late from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, inviting the public to come and enjoy art after work.

Nearly 20 members of NAAD have already committed to the first "Art After Hours" on June 4th and others are expected to join the effort by the event’s launch. FRANKLIN, Tenn., June 2, 2009--The Third Annual Art Fusion Show 2009 will feature the fine art and crafts by members of the Arts Council of Williamson County (ACWC) and artists from The Row @ The Factory, on Friday, June 5, at 1 to 9 p.m. and continuing Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The juried art show will open on Friday, June 5, at 1 p.m. The Friday evening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. will include a wine tasting by Del Rio Wine & Spirits, music by Jack Grant, gourmet food by Garden Gate Catering and lots of great art to view. On Saturday, the art show and sale will continue all day with music by Orchestra Nashville from 1 to 3 p.m.

Renovations begin this week on the future home of Open Lot on 4th Ave. South. New windows, new floors, track lighting, sinks, public bathrooms, etc. will all be put in during the next three weeks. There are still a few private studios available for move-in for July. I would love to know everyone's plans for move-in before July 1st so we can possibly share truck, dolly, etc. to make the whole process go a little faster.


Recently we've been talking about who Open Lot should be working with and how to keep the space and the group sustainable. Now that the space is quickly becoming available for use, let's talk more about the specifics of what we should show and how we should use the space as a public venue. What are the kinds of shows you've heard and read about and thought, "that sounds amazing, but would never fly in Nashville"? Don't forget to keep a look out for exhibition ideas outside of visual art, and please bring others who have ideas or just want to support new kinds of art in Nashville.
