New Artist Opportunities for Photographers - Open to Interpretation

New Artist Opportunities for Photographers

Open to Interpretation - Water's Edge
Water's ever changing surface and symbolism has held our imagination since ancient times. Images that capture water's transition are as prolific as water itself; they can be found everywhere. We are drawn to water for a myriad of different reasons - all subjects (color or black & white) are eligible.

Submit by April 26: $30 for 5 images, $10 each additional
Deadline June 7: $35 for 5 images, $10 each additional
Awards: $300 Juror's choice
Juror: Douglas Beasley, Photographer and Educator

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Open to Interpretation - Intimate Landscape
Landscapes conjure images of vast, sweeping scenes, but the details captured by a photograph can turn a seemingly impersonal setting into an intimate story. It's up to the artist to define what constitutes and intimate landscape, be it representational, non-representational, urban, suburban, or rural.
Submit by August 23: $30 for 5 images, $10 each additional
Deadline October 18: $35 for 5 images, $10 each additional
Awards: $300 Juror's choice
Juror: Karen Irvine, Curator Museum of Contemporary Photography
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

New Artist's Residency Grant
Vision Quest Photo Workshops announces a new yearly grant of a one-week photographic artists's residency. For mid-career fine-art photographers looking for a retreat-like experience to work on their art, reflect on their artistic direction, make new photographs, plan new career paths, or to simply have time away from work/family/life pressure and stress. Photographers can use this time to move their art or career forward or to reflect on where they are and where they are headed. For more details go to VQPhoto.com
_____________________________

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen images become the literary inspiration for the writers' submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

* Courtney Love recently paid $430,000 to settle a lawsuit in which she was accused of sending defamatory tweets about a fashion designer.
* Photobucket won a victory in court in a copyright infringement lawsuit because it followed simple steps under the DMCA.
* Congress is considering new privacy measures, just as location-identifying tools like FourSquare gain popularity.

As artists and those in the arts embrace social media to connect with
patrons and audiences, what do you need to know to maximize your
opportunities and decrease your chances of getting sued?

Stephen Zralek explains the evolving law of social media, covering topics that include defamation, endorsements, trademarks, copyrights, privacy, marketing to children and employment issues.

Handmade & Bound Nashville Book & Zine Opportunities - October 2011

Handmade & Bound Nashville is a festival celebrating independent publications and printed matter, featuring artists’ books, zines, and mini-comics. This is an event for publishers and artists (as well as zine distros) and book art fans to come together to sell and/or trade their handmade and affordable publications and creations. Handmade & Bound Nashville will be held on Saturday, October 1, at Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film (2298 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.) in Nashville, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission will be free. Be prepared for workshops, documentary screenings, zine readings, guest speakers, and other local events. Detail TBA

There is also a juried book/zine exhibit running the month of October in the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery (opening Sept. 30)

The theme of the exhibition is Encoded Structures: Interpreting the Story:

In a sense, books and zines act a physical incarnations for a coded language made up of letters, words, symbols, and materials. The author devises the code, fashioning the structure through choices in sequence, material, size, etc. The reader interprets the encoded structure in a personal way as they read, examine and turn the pages (or other elements) of the book or book-like structure. This exploration of the physicality of the structure speaks to the intimacy of the book form and the book as personal relic. This exhibit will focus on the book and zine as art objects that use form, content, and context within every aspect of the structure to convey a message and theme to the reader.

The following prizes will be awarded:
1st Place – $100
2nd Place – $75
3rd Place – $25
(up to five 3rd place purchase awards may be given)

Vendor tables are also available.

April 11-Shelley Snow at Art Up Close and Persona

April 11-Shelley Snow at Art Up Close and Personal

Shelley Snow, of Nashville, an artist who spent some of her childhood living
at Carnton Plantation and who teaches watercolor classes in Williamson
County, will speak at Art: Up Close and Personal on Monday, April 11, at 6
p.m., at the Williamson County Public Library.

A Franklin, Tennessee native, Shelley spent more than a dozen years growing up in the Carnton Plantation home with her parents and two sisters. Her artistic abilities became so apparent at the age of seven, Shelley's mother found a German woman living in Franklin to teach her watercolor painting. She continued to master the art of watercolor painting as well as develop her talents in other mediums.

Her oil and watercolor commissions for Portraits and landscapes have taken her all over the world. Shelley has been commissioned by clients in Europe, Japan, China, Tahiti, the South Seas and the Middle East. She has traveled extensively in Mexico to paint and had a one-woman show in Mexico City.

The Arts Council is proud to present this evening series co-sponsored by Williamson County Public Library & O'More College of Design.
