Nature Drawing for Journal Keeping

June 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28, Aug 3, 2011 new class

This class is for creative people who have always wanted to render elements of the natural world. Honing our skills of observation we will turn to the natural world for inspiration. Using flowers, ferns, leaves etc...from Heather's garden this class will give you the basic drawing skills and confidence to capture the elegance and mystery of them.
Playing it Safe: Protective Enclosures

July 9-10, 2011 new class (possible reschedule - please contact BookWorks)

This class will explore several options for creative protective enclosures for books, prints and other collected materials. This will be the first in a series of classes, each of which will focus on two structures. For our first course, students will learn how to make case-bound paper portfolios, as well as a slip case and chemise.
Magic Box
Wednesday, July 21, 2011 10 - 5 pm

Instructor: Steve Pittelkow
Learn the essential elements of box making with a twist. The magic box opens two ways to reveal either one or two compartments, depending on how it's opened. In addition to the magic, this class will provide a sound basis for box construction and various methods for covering with special attention to learning accurate measuring and cutting. Students will receive a book board thickness measuring template for future construction projects. All levels.
Letterpress Printing Intensive

July 23 - 31 , 2011 new class
8 days, Saturday - with a break on Tuesday - Sunday, 9 - 5 pm

Three incredible instructors have teamed up and put together a letterpress intensive for students who want to move forward quickly in a letterpress practice and are interested in working independently in the BookWorks letterpress studio.
Vandercook Maintenance

August 3 and 4, 2011
Wednesday and Thursday, 10 - 4 pm Instructor: Paul Moxon,
Participants will learn all the points of maintenance, cleaning and lubrication so as to be prepared for potential problems and make or direct repairs.



Moku Hanga with Andy Farkas
August 19, 20 and 21, 2011
Friday, 6 - 9 pm, Saturday & Sunday, 10 - 5 pm
Instructor: Andy Farkas

Learn the centuries old Japanese method of woodblock carving and printing using non-toxic water-based pigments and rice paste also called Moku Hanga. Students will learn traditional methods and tips for carving woodcuts as well as the kento registration technique for printing multiple color blocks.
Altered Books, Part 1 & 2

Altered book artists like to say there are no rules. To that I would add, just a chance to play and have fun. In this workshop we will use collage and embellishment to turn old books into interactive works of art.

Come draw, oogle, drink, and rock out with your chalk out! Dr Sketchy's returns to the 5 Spot in July with a face melter! Diletta Delight dons her best rock regalia, and local cage rattlers Hurts to Laugh will blow your doors off with live music between poses. $10 to draw, $5 to take in the spectacle, not to mention prizes for the artists. It's also the new host's birthday, so lewd gifts wrapped in $20 bills are encouraged. Murray the Wonder Tip Dog may also make an appearance (should his schedule allow).

Come on down, bring a friend, and remember, you don't need to know how to draw to have fun with us...everybody's welcome in the fun!

Call for Artists - Hillsboro Village Art Walk

The Hillsboro Village Art Walk is always looking for artists to show during the Walk every 1st Thursday of the month from 5-8 pm, year-round. (Some shops keep art up for the whole month).
Feel free to contact any of the shops and restaurants to ask if they would show your art, music, photography, etc... for the WALK, everyone knows all about it.
The Shops will independently decide if your art is appropriate for them.

The July Walk is moving one week in order to celebrate Bastille Day on July 14th, 5-8 pm. Then going back to 1st Thursdays after that. They are looking for French-themed art for this particular event.

Uncommon Threads: The Handicrafts in Book Arts

THEME - One of the best aspects of working in the field of book and paper
arts is the chance to work with so many exciting artistic materials and
techniques‚ even traditional handicraft techniques. Some would say the rise
of Etsy has fueled a resurgence in artists turning to knitting, embroidery,
sewing, beading, felting, needlework, fabric, stitching and quilting.
Macrame, anyone? Combine these techniques with the book and paper arts and
we have a new era in making. *Uncommon Threads* seeks artist books and other
forms of book and paper art that utilize handicraft techniques, materials or
subjects.

MEDIA - This exhibit is open to hand crafted book and paper arts related
works created as either edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural
books, book objects, altered books, zines, broadsides and sculptural pieces
are all encouraged. Any medium, any style, any size.

AWARDS - Three artists will receive "Best of Show Awards" which will include
a certificate and special marketing blitz focusing on their work. One artist
will receive a "Library Choice Award" which will be awarded based on ballots
cast by our library and museum customers and will also receive a certificate
and marketing blitz.

DEADLINE – Submissions are due no later than August 13, 2011

Arts In The Park, “Art In The Heart of Hamblen County,” is a one-day celebration of visual and performing arts—two-dimensional fine art, artistic photography, and sculpture, theater, music, and dance. JUROR: Wendy M. Blazier, Senior Curator, Boca Raton Museum of Art



For more than 30 years, Wendy M. Blazier she has been active in South Florida as a museum curator, arts lecturer, juror of art shows and competitions, and a strong advocate for today’s contemporary artists working in all media. Ms. Blazier is a published art historian, arts writer, and veteran museum administrator who, since 2001, serves as Senior Curator at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, where she is responsible for the organization and presentation of the Museum’s changing exhibitions, and permanent collections management. The Boca Raton Museum of Art houses an outstanding collection of photography, numbering more than 1500 images, and representing a veritable textbook of 19th and 20th century developments spanning the history of the medium. From early processes to large contemporary works, the Museum’s photography collection demonstrates the range of photographic media from documentary to conceptual. As Senior Curator at the Museum, Ms. Blazier has organized numerous photography exhibitions of internationally and nationally prominent artists’ works.



Exhibition - The 45 selected photographers will participate in a collective exhibition at the Artists Haven Gallery. The exhibition will be August 6, 2011 – August 31, 2011.



Artists Reception & Awards Presentation - Saturday, August 6, 2011 6 - 9pm. Complimentary wine, hors d’ oeuvres & desserts. Casual attire. Event is free and open to public.



Book - A Fine Art Limited Edtion Book will be published & released for sale.



Awards - From the overall entries, 45 artists will be selected (5 artists in each of the 9 categories). Of those, 9 artists will win a Best of Category Award (1 artist from each category). And of those, there will be a 1st Place Best of Show Award winner, 2nd Place Judges Award winner, and a 3rd Place Merit Award winner.

One Day Workshop $25



Summer Starts this week and what a way to start then with a day with ART !

Blue Fig Editions will be holding a one day 4 hour workshop this Saturday June 25th.

This workshop with show you five different types of printmaking:



1. Etching/Intaglio

2. Lithography

3. Woodcut/Lino cut

4. Silkscreen

5. Mono-types



This workshop is geared to artist and non-artist to learn several styles of printmaking in a professional studio. There will be demonstrations on all 5 methods. The demonstrations will offer traditional methods as well and new techniques. You will walk away with knowledge of several printmaking methods and how to apply them to your art. Plan on attending this Saturday workshop from 10:00 am to 2:00pm. All this for a cost of $25.



This workshop will be fast paced and informative and will be geared to demonstrations and teaching printmaking techniques. If you would like to try out any of the methods learned the following day Blue Fig will hold one of their "Open Studio" times. Individual work with your own hands on experience could happen the next day during studio time of 10-4 on Sunday June 26th. Future classes and workshops will also be available to apply your newly learned printmaking techniques.
