METRO ARTS ANNOUNCES CALL FOR PUBLIC ART SUBMISSIONS
Metro Nashville Arts Commission (Metro Arts) has opened a call for artist qualifications (RFQ) for a multi-site public art installation commemorating the neighborhood impact and citizen response of the historic 2010 floods.
The “Watermarks” project will connect artists with local neighborhoods to create original art works that form a reflective community gathering place inspired by the stories and experiences of Nashvillians during the May 2010 floods. Artists will be chosen through a competitive process to work directly with residents of the six most flood-impacted neighborhoods. The six works will be permanently located in parks within the six areas, which include:

    Delray (West Park)
    Antioch ( Antioch Community Center)
    Bordeaux (Hartman Park)
    Bellevue (Harpeth Knoll Park)
    East Nashville (Shelby Park)
    Pennington Bend (Two Rivers Park)

Art works will vary by location in terms of medium and fabrication and may include, but are not limited to, benches, backdrops, screening and natural features.  Artists will be encouraged to use found materials and appropriate flood related artifacts in the fabrication of their work.

These six works will be commissioned for original design and fabrication and are part of a regional call for artists who reside within a 250-mile radius of Nashville. Submission deadline is December 16, 2011, 4:30 PM CT. The location maps and RFQ are available at http://www.artsnashville.org.

Art: Up Close & Personal Marcia Billig - Sculpture- October 10 2011

Marcia Billig
Sculpture
October 10
6 - 7:30 pm

Williamson County Public Library
(main conference room)
1314 Columbia Pike
Franklin, TN 37064

In it's third year, the Arts Council is proud to present this evening series for 2011.
Some of the most renowned local artists will share an up-close and personal glimpse into their lives and their work.

Billig, who lives in Bethesda, Md., reveals her approach to her work, “I have been creating public sculptures in bronze for the past 20 years. Through my figurative art, I try to express a sense of joy, energy and movement. Many of the titles of my works, such as ‘Inner Light’, ‘Taking Flight,’ ‘Dance of Light’ and ‘Lift Off,’ express the character of the figures—hopeful and uplifted. I strive to convey these emotions and create an interaction between the figures in the sculpture and the viewers.”

Before creating her commissioned art for public spaces, Billig gathers “input of the people who will be enjoying the space or facility.” Her public figurative bronze sculptures for both indoor and outdoor spaces have ranged in size from four feet to 12 feet in height.

Teaching as well as sculpting has been included in her life’s work. She earned her master of fine arts in sculpture from American University, a master of arts in education from George Washington University and a bachelor of arts from Emory University.

Not only are five of her sculptures installed in the Washington, D.C., area, they are included in the revised edition of “The Sculpture of Washington, D.C., A Cultural History” by James Goode, published in 2008. These works include “Balance,” Granddaughters,’ “Taking Flight,” “The Commuter” and “The Juggler.”  The public art commission, her bronze sculpture, ”Balance,” is installed at North Lincoln Park in Washington, D. C.  Her 15 Montgomery County, Md., art commissions include bronze sculptures, a painted mural, ceramic murals, and bronze bas reliefs. Numerous other public and private commissions are found in Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia.

The program is funded in part by The Tennessee Arts Commission Arts Build Communities (ABC) Grant Program. This series has been developed to educate students in the arts as well as those in the community who have an

FRANKLIN, Tenn., September 27, 2011—Historic StARTS art classes for children, sponsored by The
Arts Council of Williamson County for children, ages three to six, will explore photography now and then
during “Victorian Me!” on Tuesday, October 11, at 10 a.m. at the Carnton Plantation.
“Children will experience the joy of photography by using digital cameras to take their own
photographs of the Carnton Plantation and grounds. They will print out their images and frame these
photographs,” explains Nan Zierden, director of the program. “During the tour of the mansion, they will
explore the attic and examine the tintype photos provided by museum staff.”
Zierden continues, “We will talk about the clothing of the Victorian era. The children will select various
Victorian costumes to try on and dress up in. They will also be given their choice of paper mask to embellish.
We will talk briefly about masquerade play parties that were a popular way to celebrate the end of fall.”
The fee for the class (including the supply fee) is $10 per child, and no charge for the parent or
caregiver who is expected to stay throughout the class with the child. Often, the parent or caregiver is
involved in helping the child in the learning process. The last program in 2011 is scheduled at Carnton
Plantation on November 8 at 10 a.m.
