Artist Thursdays 2010

Beginning March 4th 2010 and continuing through fall every Thursday from 9am to 1pm. Oils, Watercolors, Photography, Writing, or perhaps you would like to join us to listen and learn by watching other artists create.

Beverages provided, bring a bag lunch and your creative supplies of choice. Only $20 weekly. Set up anywhere on the grounds surrounding the house. There are 2 1/2 acres of creeks, garden paths, porches, a covered pavilion, barn, chicken coop and a garden house.

Although this is not a formal class, we will be working on something new every Thursday and will have a noontime show and tell for those interested in sharing. Artist Sharon Rusch Shaver will be available for encouragement, critiques, and demonstrations, drawing on a carreer of over 30 years working nationally and internationally as a fine artist. A large variety of painting supplies will be available for artists to try new mediums for a small additional fee.

Come and join a group of artists willing to share artistic ideas in beautiful surroundings in all kinds of spring, summer and fall weather. With four large covered areas, and gardens that have matured for the past ten years, the blooming of iris, tulips, daffodils, dogwood, grapevines and countless other wild Tennessee plants begins in March and continues until late fall. Lots of wildlife as well to inspire. Misty rainy days are as wonderful as bright and sunny ones for giving the inspriration to create. I look forward to having you join me in creating something special on Thursday mornings in 2010!

Create your own works of Found Art just in time for the holidays. Found Art brings together overlooked, forgotten or broken things - usually bits of wood, metal, fabric or paper - to create something of beauty and meaning.

Basic materials included. Participants encouraged to bring personal photos, fabrics or other found objects to add to their artwork. Each participant can expect to complete at least one, and up to four, original works of art, plus acquire the knowledge to make more found art in the future!

Shakerag Workshops in Sewanee, TN, in June 2009

There are still places available in several of classes at Shakerag Workshops in Sewanee, TN, in June 2009. There are two week-long sessions (June 13-20 and June 21-27), with classes in bamboo, beading, felting, soft sculpture, book arts, mudcloth dying, digital art, clay, quilting, and inkjet printing. Beginners and experienced artists are welcome. Shakerag has become known for its excellent faculty from around the country, and for the "extras" - superb locally grown food, swimming in the campus lake, late nights in the studios. Andrew Wagner, editor of ReadyMade magazine, will speak on Wednesday evening, June 24. Several Nashvillians have enjoyed Shakerag over the last few years and can recommend the program. Relief Printmaking:
Relief printmaking is the oldest form of printmaking and is accessible to everyone with or without a printing press.
The uppermost surface of the material used for printing is inked, and printed from as with a rubber stamp. The cut marks below the surface do not receive ink and therefore will not print.
Styrofoam, cardboard, cork, linoleum, plexiglass, vinyl and all sorts of found objects both natural and manufactured can be used to make a relief print.

INSTRUCTOR: Nashville artist Marlynda Augelli.
Marlynda is a member of the Platetone Printmaking Cooperative, The Tennessee Art League and the Plowhaus Artists Cooperative.
She teaches printmaking to elementary school children through a YMCA after school program called artEmbrace, and also teaches for the Tennessee Art League in an after school arts program for at risk teenagers.
During the Fall and Winter months she teaches printmaking to the homeless at the Campus for Human Development.

ECO CLASS SERIES: Found Art Shadow Boxes

Have you ever wanted to beautify your house and neighborhood? Have you ever wanted to make beautiful art?
Well then, Found Art Shadow Boxes is the class for you! Here is how you go about combining both desires- go through your alley, picking up interesting objects (i.e. unrecognized treasures sometimes known as trash), bring your finds to Art and Invention and build your very own found object art sculpture! Also feel free to bring in natural materials such as dried leaves, twigs, nests, hollow eggs, wool, etc as natural items make for good contrast to man made. So get out, walk, explore (safely), clean your alley and create a wonderful art piece!

Late Coptic Bookbinding

Course Description:

Focusing on book production practiced in Egypt during the seventh to
eleventh centuries, participants will each build a book with laminated papyrus boards, covered in elaborately worked leather. We will blind tool, punch, pierce, lace, and stitch the leather before covering the book. A peg and strap closure will be fashioned from bone or brass and leather. The range of textures, handwork techniques, and the feel and weight of the completed book are what make this structure particularly unique and exquisite!

Artist Biography:

Shanna works out of her studio in Harrisville, New Hampshire. Her
studio work is focused on integrating historic binding methods into new book forms, and at the moment she is focused on creating small books with covers of carved bone. She also produces simple hand tools for book binders and craftspeople. Shanna has taught workshops for Columbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts, Wells Book Arts Summer Institute, The Center for Book Arts, and Penland School of Crafts

Developing Ideas for Artist’s Books

Course Description:
Recent trends in book arts have focused almost exclusively on book structures and reproduction techniques. Content is often left until last. This workshop focuses on generating form and content for books. Participants will use simple materials, writing exercises, brainstorming techniques, and class critiques to spark ideas. Although no previous experience is necessary, this will be a challenging and rewarding workshop. It will be particularly useful for designers, artists, and writers who want to approach creative work from the inside out, giving participants tools that will allow them to work more effectively in the studio. Book structures and technical issues will be discussed as they relate to specific projects developed in the class. Participants can expect to have several mock-ups by the end of this session.

Students will learn to generate content-driven work and to critique their own work in progress, as well as the work of others. Emphasis is on practical problem-solving technique as it applies to creative work. Previous experience is not necessary but it is helpful. Participants should be open to trying new techniques and exercises.

Artist Biography:
Susan E. King is an artist and writer who grew up in Kentucky. She moved to Los Angeles to work with artist Judy Chicago and began making books at the Women’s Graphic Center with offset and letterpress equipment. Her work is published under the Paradise Press imprint, and is in major collections including the Getty Center Research Library, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Mills College, Oakland. With the recent dispute over Shepard Fairey's use of an AP photograph as a reference for his Obama poster, fair use has been discussed in the news quite a bit lately. The concept of "fair use" generally refers to the use of copyrighted material without the author's permission for a limited and "transformative" purpose such as commentary, criticism or parody. During this seminar, we will attempt to bring clarity to this often murky and confusing area of copyright law, including looking at guidelines for artists when determining whether their proposed use of a copyrighted work might be a "fair use" or not.

Taught by Ken Sanney, a VLPA volunteer lawyer from Day & Blair, P.C. Ken is also an adjunct professor of law at Middle Tennessee State University where he teaches copyright law and entertainment contracts.

Terry Thacker, a Nashville-based artist and professor and chair of the fine arts department at Watkins College of Art, Design and Film, will lead this two-day intensive figure painting workshop. On Saturday, the program will begin with a discussion of the works on view in the Paint Made Flesh exhibition, with the focus on the way artists employ of a wide range of painterly effects to suggest the carnal properties and cultural significance of human flesh. Participants will then move to the Frist Center studios where the discussion will continue during a figure painting session with a nude model. On Sunday, participants will continue working in the studio with the model.


Cost: $50 members; $60 non-members. Cost includes all supplies and gallery admission. Participants may bring their own lunches or purchase them in the Frist Center’s café.

artEMBRACE One-Nighter Classes Start Next Week! March 23-April 2, 2009

There is still some time (and some room) left for you to join one of our upcoming special One-Night-Only classes at artEMBRACE East Creative Arts Studio right next door to the Y-CAP building. The building is cozy, the classes are amazing, the teachers are top-notch, and the prices are ridiculously inexpensive!

3) Thursday, April 2nd (6:30 - 9:00pm): Printmaking with Marlynda Augelli – Learn to make lovely one-of-a-kind prints and even silk- screening! Last season this class sold out and we had to open up another one! They've since asked for more and we're givin' it to ya!

A model changes poses every third week.

Alan will provide clay for those sculpting.
Students who choose to paint or draw should bring their own supplies.

This seminar will introduce many basic elements of copyright law including notice, registration, and term, as well as include a discussion of works for hire and fair use.

Sarratt Art Studios is pleased to announce its first May Arts Intensive. Nicknamed “Art Camp for Adults” this popular studio art program will be offering many popular classes as well as new ones designed just for the Intensive. Class offerings include pottery, drawing/painting. Jewelry, creative quilts, off loom bead weaving, and many more exciting art offerings. Classes are non credit and will meet daily from 10:00am – 2:00pm or from 4:00pm – 8:00pm. Many of the courses offer one week or two week options. intimate, progressive and inspiring!

Professional Critique Workshop and Consultation

This workshop offers artists a professional, objective review of your current body of work so that you are a ble to continue with or evolve in your creative endeavors OR simply determine if your body of work is ready for gallery exhibition and or representation. We take a look at how to formally analyze and intellectually interpret your work. We discuss what is strong as well as what is lacking and what elements and or concepts can be pushed further to set your body of work apart. This is an important process that focuses on information gathering, and persuasive oral and justification skills. Group classes allow artists to receive feedback from the instructor as well as their contemporaries. Excellent for recent graduates or emerging-mid career artists.

Portfolio Presentation & Pricing Workshop and Consultation

("Professional Critique Workshop" recommended as a prerequisite to this class)

This workshop will ensure that your portfolio presentation is immaculate and that your gallery submission guidelines are met. We will review your body of work, prepared images, resume, exhibition history, sales history, pricing (important!) and website (or discuss the possibility of one.) The class will help determine when where and how to submit your work to professional galleries for exhibition opportunities and or gallery representation so that you are noticed and selected by the appropriate programs locally or nationally. We steer you in the right direction with confidence using our knowledge of and connections with the professional art world.

One on one ($50/workshop)
