MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL: THE TRUE COST OF COAL



A high energy, interactive, graphic-based picture-lecture that speaks to the overwhelming and complex picture of globalization, militarization, and resource extraction, as well as the small-scale changes and actions we can undertake to build another world!

WHAT: MTSU Student Programming hosts an interactive presentation about resource extraction in Appalachia



Long exploited as a resource-extraction colony within the US, the

Appalachian Mountains are home to a fight for survival whose outcome will determine, in part, the industrial power of this country. Without coal there would be no 'cheap' electricity. Today’s energy corporations and government bodies are continuing to show the extent of their violence and greed as they push their extractive agendas in the “New Coal Rush.”



Our insatiable demand for cheap power has lead to the most extreme and devastating form of coal mining yet, Mountaintop Removal (MTR). The TRUE COST OF COAL graphic uses MTR in Appalachia as a lens through which to understand the historical and contemporary story of ENGERY, RESOURCE EXTRACTION and of AMERICAN EMPIRE accelerating throughout the world.



We will expose the DECEPTIONS of CLEAN COAL technologies and bring to light the ensuing CLIMATE CHAOS facing the world today.



With a gigantic portable mural-in-process teeming with intricate images of plants and animals from the most bio-diverse temperate forest on the planet, the Bees will share (and seek) stories of how coal mining and Mountaintop Removal affect communities and ecosystems throughout Appalachia and beyond.



This graphic also looks to the future, raising questions about resistance, regeneration, and remediation while celebrating stories of struggle from mountain communities. The TRUE COST OF COAL will challenge all of us who casually flip on a light switch to examine our own connections to MTR- and to think about what we can do to stop it from within our own communities.

Middle Tennessee State University – Todd Gallery Call for proposals for gallery exhibitions 2009-2010

National Deadline: October 31, 2008

The Middle Tennessee State University’s Department of Art, Todd Gallery is accepting exhibition proposals for 2009-2010. All visual media considered. Founded in 1911 as one of three state normal schools for teacher training, MTSU now hosts the state’s largest population of undergraduates.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Artists should submit 10 digital images of recent work (within the last 3 years.) Please follow these instructions for your work to be considered.

Provide the following on a Mac compatible CD:

• A .pdf file containing 10 images of your work with information regarding title, year, medium, and dimensions. (This can be created by exporting a PowerPoint presentation and saving as a PDF file.) Necessary details of 3D work may be included in addition to the 10 images.
• A printed copy of thumbnail images, showing the same information as on the CD, including artist name.
• Artist’s Statement, resume & bio (Microsoft Word Documents)

Label the CD with your name and Todd Gallery Submission 2009-10

Proposals must arrive no later than October 31st.

Late proposals will not be considered. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope if materials are to be returned.

EXHIBITION:
Selected artists will be required to pay for shipping to and from the University, and for insuring the work in transit. Selected artists may be invited to provide a lecture on their work, which pays a small honorarium. Images included in proposals, if not the actual work, should be representative of work to be shown.

The Art Department of Middle Tennessee State University invites entries for its second 12" x 12" small works, juried exhibition. There are no media restrictions. Works submitted may not exceed 12" in any direction including frame and base, in the case of three-dimensional works. Awards to be made will total no less than $2,100.
