The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to announce availability of the next Betsy Worden Memorial Artist Residency at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Deadline for receipt of application is Friday, March 19, 2010. An application is attached, or one may be downloaded at www.knoxalliance.com (under Calls & Press Releases).
Available to college students and other young and emerging artists, The Betsy Worden Memorial Artist Residency includes:
+ FREE and exclusive access to a 10’ x 10’ artist studio located in the Emporium Center;
+ Sponsored membership in the Arts & Culture Alliance for one year;
+ Display of at least one piece of artist’s new work in the public areas of the Emporium Center each month of the residency (beginning with the First Friday opening reception on April 2, 2010); and
+ Solo exhibition of artist’s new work in the Balcony gallery of the Emporium Center near the end of the residency period (September 3-24, 2010).
The resident artist is required to occupy the studio and be present to show new work each First Friday of the month, spend a significant amount of time creating work in the Emporium studio, and help hang monthly changing exhibits in the Emporium galleries if necessary. Artist may also offer curatorial input and be eligible for curatorial opportunities in programming gallery space. We are currently accepting applications. This will be a juried placement. In exchange for a minimal rent, the selected artist will receive studio space in the gallery and numerous benefits and exposure.

EXPOSURE and BENEFITS: Featured at the Gallery Crawls and on the website. A studio in a commercial gallery in the downtown gallery district. Financial opportunity for gallery commissions
SQUARE FOOTAGE: 225, lighting and desk included (door with horses, architect style)
NOTES ON USE OF SPACE:
· Lease required. Must add The Arcade Co. as additionally insured to your insurance policy.
· 24/7 access to building and 24/7 security
· A clean use of the desk is permitted (maybe a small easel). Internet provided for laptops.
· No large works. Dry or semi-dry materials are preferred. Nothing dangerous, loud or messy.
· Supplies must be stored away to maintain a clean, professional environment in the gallery.
· The Gallery is technically open for business if you are there but gallery owners are not. (You are not responsible for speaking with guests but we can educate you if you wish.

U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program Offers Residency
U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program Offers Residency The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission works cooperatively with the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor The U.S/Japan Creative Artists' Program. The program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary and traditional artists from the United States to spend a five-month residency in Japan to pursue their individual artistic goals. The next deadline for this program is Feb. 1, 2010. Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible. The U.S/Japan Creative Artists' Program is extremely competitive; applicants should have regional or national recognition and anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work. Artist in Residency Program with internationally known bead artist, David Chatt.
Sixteen selected artists have the opportunity to work with David through the winter and spring of 2008 to learn bead weaving techniques through jewelry, vessels, and sculpture. A final exhibition displaying the groups work will be held at the Tibbott Gallery at University School of Nashville.

The deadline for applications is December 1, 2007 and there is no application fee.
The letter of intent should explain why you want to participate, what your goals for the program are, how you can collaborate with the group, and how you feel this program can influence your work as an artist.
Artists selected MUST commit to the following dates: January 25-27, February 8-10, February 29, March 1-2, April 11-13. In addition, recommended group work days will be held every Sunday between January 27 and May 4.
