Art Making in the Lobby at Frist - FREE - Thurs, Fri nights through September 2010

Art Making in the Lobby at Frist
Thursday & Friday Nights through September
6:00-9:00 p.m., FREE

Thursday and Friday evenings in August
Featured Activity: Corrugated Couture

cor•ru•gat•ed: To shape into folds or parallel and alternating ridges and grooves.
To become shaped into such folds or ridges and grooves.

On Thursday and Friday evenings in August, the community is invited to create fine art sculpture out of a graffiti-grade medium, pitting notions of spontaneity and transition against ideals of permanence and tradition. Cardboard and other materials will inspire ideas and forms found in couture designs. The collaborative nature of the lobby activity will encourage a range of discussions with high art intentions while remaining true to an ingrained craft persuasion.

The completed pieces will range from shoes and accessories to couture designs ranging in size from 1/12th scale mock-ups to human-size couture.

Thursday and Friday evenings in September
Featured Activity: The Nature of Art: In response to Chihuly

Who doesn’t love art that breaks the mold? Chihuly’s colors and presentations stimulate the imagination in ways ordinary works rarely do. During the month of September, visitors will be invited to shape and twist cardboard, paper and other recycled items in response to the Chihuly exhibition. Recycled and environmentally friendly, the completed artwork will transform the Frist Center’s Grand Lobby into a working studio each Thursday and Friday evening. The sculpture created will be an expression of the artist’s point of view but also a statement about the nature of Chihuly’s art.

The art making activities in the Grand Lobby is FREE and open to all visitors.
