Hiram Van Gordon Gallery
Recognizing the historic precedent set by the civil rights movement of working with immediate communities to affect positive change, the Hiram Van Gordon Memorial Gallery invites Nashville-area artists, collectives and curators to submit curatorial proposals for summer exhibitions that support existing programming missions. The Hiram Van Gordon gallery encourages proposals from artists and curators with diverse backgrounds.

Application Deadlines for all proposals:
August 1, 2008 for SHIFT 2009
October 1, 2008 for PAUSE 2010
December 1, 2008 for PLAY 2011
Proposals Must Include:
• one page proposal detailing exhibition and how it supports the existing programming (for 2009: SHIFT for 2010: PAUSE for 2011: PLAY)
• resume, statement, and bio (all limited to one page each)
•10-20 images of recent work in digital form. Label images with name and number that corresponds to an image list with title, date, medium and brief description of work. CD should be labeled with artist contact and contain a PDF file that includes all images. Provide a paper copy of image list.

Each participant will make 4 or 5 small, beautiful books during the six-hour session and will have the knowledge to make lots more as very special gifts and keepsakes. For example, in the origami book class, we will make a Star or Flower book, a Caterpillar book, a Spiral Caterpillar book, a German Accordion book and a Triangle book. Books will be made of hand-made or recycled paper and are thus not only a labor of love but also a green product.
The cost of $85 per 6-hour session includes instruction, materials, yummy box lunch, and complimentary wine at day’s end!

Nashville Craft Mafia - Revolution of Craft 2008: Deadline: May 28, 2008
Applications are now available for the June 21st event, The Revolution of Craft 2008. Applications will also be posted on the message board. If you had applied fort the first date that was postponed, we still have your application and will consider you for the June 21st event.
This is a juried event. Applications are due by May 28th and we will post the vendor list on June 1st.
Booth fee is $30.00 for member and $40.00 for non members. There is a $5 non-refundable application fee.
The show will be June 21st from 12:00pm until 8:00pm and will feature 50 vendors.

The new Saturday Craft at the Market will be every Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning May 31st. The Craft Market is in the uncovered area between the two farm sheds. This area will now be closed to traffic
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. There is room for 12 craft vendors, each occupying a 10’ x 10’ space. The fee to participate is $20 a day.
• Set-up time is between 9am and 11:00am. The event runs from 11 am - 4 pm
• Booth set-up and tear-down is your responsibility.
• The Nashville Farmers’ Market bears no responsibility for any damage, loss or theft to your wears, display materials and personal property.
• Please pick up around your booth area before you leave.
• Spaces are 10’ by 10’ and are numbered (1-12) on the pavement.
• The Farmers’ Market does not provide tables or tents.
• We highly recommend bringing a tent, and since the areas are accessible from several sides, bringing two tables.
• Tents will be on asphalt; as such you will be unable to stake tents. Please bring sand bags or weights to secure tents.
• All vendors must abide by the Farmers’ Market rules and regulations. They are available in the Market
offices or online at www.nashvillefarmersmarket.org.
• All Farmers’ Market vendors are required to have a Tennessee Sales Tax registration and a current business license.
• Applications will be accepted beginning on May 12th, 2008. You may fax, mail or email a copy of the application to the Market offices. If spaces are filled for the day, you will be placed on the waiting list.
• To help increase variety for shoppers, vendors are limited to two visits per month.
• Payments for booths are due no later than 4:30 p.m. the Monday prior to your visit. Any booths not paid for by then will be given to those on the waiting list in the order they were received.
• To qualify for the craft market you must first submit a photo, either electronically or physically, to the Market Manager that shows your product and a description of how you make the product. Artist and crafters that use a learned skill to produce their products are preferred and all vendors must make 70% of the item they are selling. Products that are assembled from kits will not be considered.

Lost Boys & aRT hOUSE hold Kids ART Camp: May 28-30, 2008
The Lost Boys Foundation of Nashville &
tHE aRT hOUSE
will be holding Kids ART Camp
May 28, 29, 30th noon to 4p
for rising 1st through 5th graders!
The mask above was created by one of the Lost Boys artists.
During camp, each child will work as a team with one of the Lost Boys to create a collaborative mask that will be featured in the next Art Opening at The Lost Boys Studio!
They will learn the process behind both clay and ceramic masks an the stories behind why the Lost Boys create these masks!
The cow sculpture below is an example of what The Lost Boys traditionally made from clay dirt from river banks as they travelled from Sudan to Ethiopia to Kenya.
They played with cows like our kids play with action figures. In their culture, wealth was measured by how many cows you had and the men spent their days herding and tending to the cows. The Lost Boys had been violently separated from their families at the young ages of 5-9yrs. (If they were any older they could stay to fight, any younger and they could not run fast enough!)
Each camper will be given a cow created by one of Nashville's Lost Boys an the be given the opportunity to paint/decorate it.
During Art Camp
campers will also paint a canvas, depicting what is important for them to have in their "village". They will sample traditional African snacks and learn traditional stories that The Lost Boys were told when they were children, first by their families and then by each other as they were forced to survive without their families.
ALL MONIES received from camp fees are going to The Lost Boys Foundation and to The Lost Boys who will be taking time off from work to teach out children.

During the 3 days our children will be exposed to painting, sculpture and mask making. They will be taught by The Lost Boys Artists and aRT hOUSE artists. They will learn traditional African stories, songs and games.
Our hope is that this experience will illustrate to our children the importance of our global community and how we can take care of each other.
We highly recommend watching the movie "God Grew Tired of Us" that documents the plight of The Lost Boys of Sudan.

Zeitgeist will host the second panel discussion from the Dialogues exhibition series this Tuesday from 6 to 8PM in the gallery to address topics related to the medium of photography (see last week's Tennessean article on the first panel held for the medium of painting).
Invited panelists are: Caroline Allison (artist and Watkins College professor of photography), Wendy Koenig (professor of Art History at Middle Tennessee State University and ArtPapers contributor), and Pradip Malde (artist and University of the South, Sewanee photography professor).

The title says it all! Neil McBride will discuss issues faced by lawyers who advise nonprofit organizations. Neil has nearly 30 years of experience advising nonprofit organizations as the Director of Rural Legal Services of Tennessee and in his current role as General Counsel to the Legal Aid Society. He also teaches a clinical seminar on representing nonprofit corporations at the University of Tennessee College of Law. TNVLA is delighted that he has agreed to share his considerable knowledge with us. This will be a great program for TNVLA volunteer lawyers and others interested in working with nonprofit organizations.

Portrait Painting Class @ Battle Ground Academy: June 23-June 27
Portrait Painting Class
This one-week course will cover portrait painting working in a limited oil palette.
The first two days will concentrate on working with an oil wash technique to create a full tonal painting of the portrait.
This technique is a great transition from drawing to painting. The aim will be to create a finished study using this technique.
The last three days, utilizing a direct method of painting, we will be working with a limited palette of 4 colors of white, black, yellow ochre and cadmium red.
Basic supplies will be provided. Additional supplies may be purchased individually.

Part-time instructors needed:
The Visual and Performing Arts Department at Volunteer State Community College is seeking adjunct instructors for Introduction to Art (Art Appreciation). It is a college level course the meets for 3 hours per week. Sections are 1 night, or 2 and 3 day spits. Fall and Spring semesters are 15 weeks; summer semester is daily for 5 weeks. The base pay rate for this 3 credit lecture course is $1425. Faculty must hold an MA, MFA, or PhD in Art or Art History.
Volunteer State is located in Gallatin, about 35 minutes north of downtown Nashville. We are a small, but strong program offering University Parallel courses in the arts.

Dr. Mishoe Brennecke, associate professor and chair of the department of Art and Art History at the University of the South, presents the final lecture of a three-part series that examines the Monet to Dalí exhibition from various disciplines. The speaker will examine Edouard Manet’s relationship to French Impressionism, including the impact of his works of the 1860s and 1870s in particular, as well as the reciprocal influence of French Impressionism on Manet’s works during the later years of his life. This is the final of a three-part lecture series examining the Monet to Dalí: Modern Masters from the Cleveland Museum of Art exhibition from various disciplines.
