We are proud to present a new evening series for 2009. Some of the most renowned local artists will share an up-close and personal glimpse into their lives and their work. The evening starts with a powerpoint presentation, followed by a question and answer period.


The series is open to the public and there is no charge to attend.

Panel on Drugs and Creativity 10-8-09 at Nashville Public Library

Join us 4-5 pm Th., Oct. 8th, at the downtown library to get a free, limited edition piece of Adrienne Outlaw's "The Enhancer Project" and to join a talk with an expert panel about how taking "smart drugs" may affect creativity and innovation.

A multi-part artwork, Outlaw's "The Enhancer Project" consists of public talks about the ethics of pharmacological neuroenhancement, publically distributed, brain-shaped viewfinders, an informative and participatory blog (http://theenhancerproject.tumblr.com/), and an installation piece for exhibit.

Panelists for the Oct. 8th talk include writer Michael Sims along with Vanderbilt University faculty Elizabeth Heitman, Jeffrey Schall and Dr. John Greer. Adrienne Outlaw will lead the discussion. Audience members may participate.

Outlaw made "The Enhancer Project" for ART MAKES PLACE, a year-long project whereby 7 artists make 7 temporary, community and performance-based artworks for public spaces in Nashville.

Engaging Art: The Future of Arts Participation in America A Presentation by Steven Tepper

March 11, 4:30 p.m.

All arts organizations, artists and arts enthusiasts are encouraged to attend this fast-paced and engaging presentation, which covers the changing ways in which people are accessing and interacting with art and how the traditional arts may need to adapt to changing audience demands. The presentation will explore what it means to participate in the arts in contemporary society, from museum attendance to music downloading. Tepper analyzes key trends involving technology, audience demographics, religion and the rise of "do-it-yourself" participatory culture, drawing on findings from his recent book with Bill Ivey, Engaging Art: The Next Great Transformation of America's Cultural Life. His research on arts engagement has been featured at more than 20 conferences and events across the country in the past two years.



About Steven Tepper:



Tepper is assistant professor in the department of sociology and associate director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University. His research and teaching has focused on creativity in society; conflict over art and culture; and cultural participation. In addition to Engaging Art: The Next Great Transformation of America's Cultural Life (Routledge 2007), he is currently completing a book on cultural conflict and social change in American cities, to be published in 2010 (University of Chicago Press).

Please join us at the Main library this weekend for a talk by Carol Barton on the history of movable and pop-up books, which will be followed by a reception for "Beyond the Page: Carol Barton’s Art and Influence," opening in the Fine Art Gallery at the Main Library. July

Carol Barton is a book artist, teacher and curator who runs Popular Kinetics Press. She has published numerous artist book editions, and her work is exhibited internationally and held in numerous collections including the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, Museum of Modern Art, The Getty Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. "Beyond the Page" is an exhibit of Carol Barton’s beautiful books and books by local artists who have studied with her. July 13- August 30 in the Fine Art Gallery at Main Library, 615 Church St., 862-5800 (hours: M-Tr, 9-8, F 9-6, Sat. 9-5, Sun. 2-5).

Typeface tour downtown Nashville: May 10

Graphic designer Griffin Norman and "Works with Words" artist Dan Brawner will lead a tour of interesting typefaces used on signs and buildings in downtown Nashville. Meet in NPL Art Gallery located on 1st floor at 11am. Rain or shine - don’t forget your walking shoes.

Call to artists - Nashville Public Library. Deadline Jan 14, 2008

Call to artists: submissions welcome through January 14 for Works with Words show

Nashville Public Library is pleased to invite artists living in Tennessee to submit artworks created between 2003 and 2008 to be considered for an exhibition titled "Works with Words." Deadline for submissions is January 14, 2008. The juried exhibition, March 15 - June 22, 2008, will be located in the first floor Art Gallery at the Main Library, and carries with it a $1000 purchase award for one piece to be selected by the library for its permanent collection.

The narrative tradition is part and parcel of Tennessee culture - from legendary tales to allegorical sermons to the lament of the blues, this is storytelling country. "Works with Words" invites Tennessee artists to tell their story through text and images. Artworks featured in this exhibition will represent a broad range of ways that text can be used in works of art. The Library Art Gallery is open to library users of all ages, so the subject matter should be appropriate for the general public. Work will be juried for artistic merit, creativity, original concept, and integration of text and image. Nashville Public Library reserves the right not to exhibit any work not consistent with the images provided for jury.
