2009 INTERNATIONAL BLACK FILM FESTIVAL NASHVILLE ANNOUNCES IT'S INDUSTRY PANEL SERIES
Top Industry Executives and Professionals Will Lead Top Notch Discussions During This Year's Festival

(Nashville, TN) The International Black Film Festival Nashville, (IBFFN) presents it's signature Industry Panel Series during the Festival, which runs September 30 - October 4, 2009 at the world-famous Gaylord Opryland Hotel, Nashville, Tennessee. The IBFFN panel series will offer in-depth conversation, lively debate, and critical insight into a broad range of issues important to the independent filmmaking community. In addition to the impressive lineup of executives and industry professionals from Hollywood , New York and local communities. IBFFN will showcase 0ver 50+ films from the USA, South Africa, Senegal, and Ghana.

“Skin” - scheduled for its official national theatrical release on October 30, 2009, starring Academy Award Nominee, Sophie Okonedo is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid South Africa is the story of a ten year old with distinct African American traits while her parents were white Afrikaners and did not know they had black ancestors until their child was born.

“My Girlfriend's Back” – starring Celebrity actress Tangi Miller and celebrity actor Malik Yoba is the story of how the "road less traveled" intrigues Derek Scott so much so that he considers throwing away his entire well orchestrated life to experience the one thing his plan has yet to provide...love.

“A Mother's Prayer” – scheduled for national DVD release in October 2009 starring Celebrity Actress Robin Givens, R&B Sensation Johnny Gill and Gospel and R&B Sensation Shirley Murdock will have it‘s official premiere as the Centerpiece film at the festival. Alvin Moore, playwright, singer/songwriter, a resident of Nashville, TN and graduate of Tennessee State University also stars in the stageplay as his signature character “Gramps” and also directs this heartfelt yet funny story of a family's struggles that lead them from heartache, pain and suffering to a place of healing.

“American Violet” – The Official Closing Night Film - starring Celebrity actress Alfre Woodard and Celebrity Actor Charles Dutton - Based on true events, this impressive new film tells one woman's story of abuse at the hands of a hostile legal system. For different reasons, it evokes such past films as Erin Brockovich, Mississippi Burning, and the works of Sidney Poitier in the Civil Rights era. American Violet tells the story of legal injustice and systemic, institutionalized racism -- and the struggle to overcome such prejudice.

"Kiss and Tail" – Explores the darkest corners of the groupie lifestyle, follows young girls who use sex to get closer to hip-hop and rap artists. The often grim investigation offers insights from the young women such as video vixen Karrine Steffans who have slept their way into careers as background dancers, and commentary from top hip-hop stars such as Big Boi and Ja Rule.

In conjunction with Twilight Visions: Surrealism, Photography, and Paris, the Frist Center is partnering with the Belcourt Theatre and Vanderbilt University’s International Lens film series and French and film departments to offer a three-part series of Surrealist and Poetic Realist films.

The film series, Surreal to Reel: Paris on Film, will start this Friday at the Frist Center with the screening of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s well-known and influential film Un Chien Andalou. This 17-minute film follows no conventional plot, but takes viewers through a dreamlike narrative from the wayward minds of two important Surrealists. Directed by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, 1929, 17 minutes. 35mm. Not Rated.

The second film, L'Atalante, tells the story of a newlywed couple living together on a barge. It illustrates the turbulent nature of learning to live with the one you love and presents realistic yet magical images of peasant and working class life. Directed by Jean Vigo, 1934, 89 minutes. 35mm. Not Rated.

Dudley Andrew, the R. Selden Rose Professor of Film and Comparative Literature and co-chair and director of graduate studies of film studies at Yale University, will introduce these two films.

The State of the Art lecture series focuses on issues in the contemporary art world and feature presentations by nationally and internationally renowned authorities.

This lecture coincides with an exhibition on view at the Frist Center: The Best of Photography and Film from the George Eastman House Collection, which features more than 200 iconic photographs, films and film-related materials selected from the world-renowned collection of George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, New York.

Dawoud Bey began his career as a photographer in 1975 with a series of photographs, Harlem, USA, that were later exhibited in his first one-person exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979. He has since had numerous exhibitions worldwide, at such institutions as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Portrait Gallery (London), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), where his works were also included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial. The Walker Art Center (location) organized a mid-career survey of his work in 1995 that traveled to institutions throughout the United States and Europe. A major publication, “Dawoud Bey: Portraits, 1975-1995,” was published in conjunction with the exhibition.

Bey’s works are included in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta, Ga.), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), National Portrait Gallery (London), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and many others. He has received numerous awards and fellowships over the course of his career including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Bey has taught at colleges, universities, and other institutions for the past 30 years, and is currently professor of photography at Columbia College Chicago. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University School of Art, and is presently represented in the United States by Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago.

The International Black Film Festival (IBFF) of Nashville announces its dynamic four day event highlighting the newest work in independent cinema, will take place October 15 - 18 in the heart of downtown Nashville, Tennessee.

There are a number of upcoming film events scheduled for Sarratt Cinema that we wish to bring to your attention. These events are free and open to the public.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq by the United States, Vanderbilt University is offering a film and discussion series examining the war.

"The aim of this series is to bring home the reality and true cost of war by portrayals from many different angles - that of soldiers, their families, Iraqi citizens, the media, corporate profiteers and so on," said David C. Wood, Centennial Professor of Philosophy and organizer of the film series with JoEl Logiudice, director of the Office of Arts and Creative Engagement.

The Iraq War: 5 Years and Counting series begins 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, with a screening of The Ground Truth: After the Killing Ends, a documentary by Patricia Foulkrod that follows young Americans through recruitment, training, combat in Iraq and their return home.

Discussions and responses led by Vanderbilt faculty and graduate students will follow each of the films. The first response will be led by Monica Casper, associate professor of sociology and director of the Women's and Gender Studies Program. Professor Casper will discuss the film, "The Ground Truth," in terms of masculinity and disability issues. She will also situate it in the personal context of a recent loss of a family member in combat.

Tuesday, March 11, a lecture by Control Room star Josh Rushing on "Spin: The Art of Selling War." Rushing is a former U.S. Marine captain who served as spokesperson at Central Command in Doha, Quatar, during Operation Iraqi Freedom and currently is a military and current affairs correspondent at Al Jazerra English.

Sunday, March 23, Iraq in Fragments by James Longley, a documentary of the war-torn country as seen through the eyes of Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds.

Tuesday, March 25, Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers by Robert Greenwald, a documentary that takes the viewer inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of profiteering in the reconstruction of Iraq.

Thursday, March 27, No End in Sight, a documentary that chronicles Iraq's descent into guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality and anarchy.

Sunday, March 30, In the Valley of Elah, a fictional drama based on the story of Richard Davis, an Iraq War veteran murdered after returning home in 2003. The film stars Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarandon and Charlize Theron.

Untitled Documentary - call for film crew

Untitled wants to document our Spring '08 show. The lead up to the show, the show, the clean up and the things that happen to bring up the lights.

By document, we mean we want to take moving pictures of all these things. We are humbled by the cost of all things related to actual film so we will shoot 'Film Style' on the best HD Digital Video format we can get.

Our goal is to have a very short clip for our website, and a half hour to hour version to pitch to Public Television and Art Channels.

Untitled Artists Group, Nashville, is a non-profit group; therefore, we will not sell or create profit for any individual with this project. It's for us; and people who want to sit and watch us in full motion pixels.

Planning has already started and we want you to be involved - We have a place for you, if you:

• Have experience with making film and video, all phases, pre- through post production.
• Have experience with Untitled but have no experience with film beyond the masterful super 8 or VHS work you did in sixth grade.
• Have no experience with Untitled, or film and video, and can't spell documentary.

We want you.

Untitled wants anyone that wants to be involved because there'll be a lot of work - and it's a hell of a good time. Hard work like digging a ditch is hard work, good time like the laundry mat is a good time compared to digging a ditch.
