Tennessee Master Craft Artist / Apprenticeship Program Announced

The Tennessee Arts Commission has announced the Tennessee Master Craft Artist / Apprenticeship Program. The program is a cooperative partnership of the Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC) and the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA). "The program is a cooperative partnership created to encourage and invest in the continuation, advancement, and creation of Tennessee craft by recognizing the role of the master craft artist/apprentice relationship as a way to preserve the state's cultural heritage," says Julie Horn, director of visual art, craft, and media for the TAC. The program will contact master craft artists to offer a period of concentrated learning to apprentices who demonstrate a commitment to further develop their abilities as specialized craft practitioners. Three master craft artist/apprentice pairs will be chosen to participate in the program, with funding available for intensive, one-on-one training to qualified apprentices by recognized master craft artists. Approved applications will receive a total of $4,000 to be divided - the master craft artist is awarded a stipend of $2,200 and the apprentice is awarded a stipend of $1,800. more...

Arts Education Special Projects Coordinator Tennessee Arts Commission

The TAC is seeking a qualified candidate interested in a long-term career in arts education. This position provides support in all aspects of the Arts Education program and reports to the Director of Arts Education. While providing management assistance and coordination of existing programs is part of this position, the Commission is interested in individuals who wish to actively contribute new and innovative ideas to its arts education programming. Fiscal Year 2010 Grant Guidelines and applications are now available on the Tennessee Arts Commission's (TAC) web site, www.arts.state.tn.us.

TAC grants are available through the Commission's eGrant system, and include several categories.

Those categories include Major Cultural Institutions; Arts Education (Artist-in-Residence, Community Learning and Teacher Training); Arts Access; Arts Project Support and Rural Arts Project Support; and General Operating Support.

Individual Artist Fellowships are available in Dance (Performance), Music (Vocal Performance), Theater (Acting), Craft, Media (Film, Video and Photography), Visual Art (Two-dimensional work) and Literary Arts (Fiction/Creative Non-fiction and Poetry).

Tennessee Arts Commission Memorial Sculpture Deadline: July 18

The Tennessee Arts Commission requests qualifications from professional artists for the creation of a sculpture to commemorate the first African Americans who served in the Tennessee General Assembly. This memorial will take form in a four-foot bronze portrait bust bearing the likeness of Representative Sampson W. Keeble of Nashville. The final piece will be displayed in a half-cylindrical wall niche on the second floor of the Capitol Building in Nashville. This project is open to established visual artists living in the United States with a minimum of two years professional experience. Minorities are strongly encouraged to apply for this opportunity. Tennessee Arts Commission Cultural Tourism Grants Deadline: March 25

These grants are available to any nonprofit organization or government entity chartered in the state of Tennessee. All projects must have an arts focus and at least one primary partner (or the applicant) must be an arts-focused entity. All potential applicants must discuss their projects with Leigh Patton, director of community arts development, by March 18, prior to submitting an application. For more information, click here.

Also, The Tennessee Arts Commission has announced that applicants

Artist Fellowships beginning Nov. 1.

The fellowships will be available in: Visual Arts (three-dimensional), Craft, and Media

(film and video); Music (instrumental performance and composition), Dance (performance

and choreography), and Theater (acting); Literary Arts (fiction/creative nonfiction,

and poetry). The award provides fellowships to outstanding professional artists who live

and work in Tennessee. The Commission anticipates that each fellowship in FY 2009 will be

$5,000. In the coming year, the Commission may award up to two fellowships in each category.

Deadline for application is: Monday, Jan. 28, 2008.
