Call for Artists! Plowhaus Holiday Show: Festivus for the Rest of Us!

Announcing the annual Plowhaus Holiday Show: Festivus for the Rest of Us! 12/5-28, 2009

Please let us know if you want to be part of this popular annual cash and carry show.
As Plowhaus members, former members and fans you are the first to know about this opportunity.

Members: $30 fee/10% commission (Join for $25 through June 2010)
Nonmembers: $50 fee/20% commission

Art should be priced to sell, preferably under $100, and each artist should provide multiple pieces in quantities to replace anything as it is purchased.

Every participant will be required to sit in the gallery for at least one two-hour shift, and it's imperative that we have the gallery open during weekday lunches to drive sales and increase traffic. Greater participation must occur if we are to keep our doors open.

Also, every artist will need to bring a bottle of wine to the opening and volunteer for at least one show job.

Please let us know your interest ASAP. And don't forget to donate your slightly used/unwanted/orphan art to the yArt Sale. We'll help it find a new home.

Day of the Dead Workshops - East Nashville - Oct 31 2009

The Plowhaus Artist Cooperative of Nashville,
in conjunction with Studio 83 East and Open Lot Nashville,
proudly presents

“El Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) 2009 at
Studio 83 East and Open Lot Nashville

A one day/night event on Saturday October 31st

The Plowhaus is proud to announce East Nashville's Day of the Dead 2009, the continuation of an East Nashville tradition. The day starts with Day of the Dead-inspired classes, followed by a night of art and music.

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

ART CLASSES -- 4 options for adults and children
(all classes at Open Lot -- 1307 Jewell St., Nashville, TN 37207)

1. Children's workshop "Impressions in Clay" for kids 7 and up. 10AM-Noon
Items will be fired and ready for pick-up one week later.
$12 RSVP to kathy-net@comcast.net (walk-ins welcome)

2. Adult Altar Workshop 10AM-Noon
$15 RSVP to girlstudio@comcast.net (walk ins welcome)

All altars created during this workshop can be included in the Day of the Dead art show at Open Lot opening on October 31.

2nd Call for Artists - Plowhaus June Show (6/6-27)

The Plowhaus Artists’ Cooperative invites local artists to be part of our next downtown show for the month of June. In keeping with the Nashville Pride Festival, occurring June 20th at Riverfront Park, our theme is a loose one, celebrating diversity, the spirit of inclusion, and the importance of accepting difference among people.

Here are some possible clues to what this art will represent (thanks to artist Betsy Clapsaddle for her slightly altered words, which I am using):

Nashville pride; meaning the city must be represented literally in the piece [like with a skyline or a landmark], or

Nashville pride; meaning if you do work in Nashville, then whatever you come up with is acceptable as long as it reasonably family friendly, or

Nashville pride; meaning acceptance of the GLBT population as one with an important place in Nashville,

For the June Downtown Art Crawl (Saturday, June 6,
2007) through the end of the month, we would like to invite artists
who want to celebrate Nashville Pride to exhibit their artworks. We
also want to hold a special reception in conjunction with the Pride
Festival Downtown on June 20th.

Everyone is welcome to participate—the $25 entrance fee (to pay for
gallery costs) will entitle artists to roughly 3-4 linear feet of wall
space. We ask that artwork be reasonably family friendly -- an honest,
mature, expression of oneself is okay. Graphic depictions probably
won’t be okay. Our goal is to celebrate a Nashville where everyone can
feel at home, included, valued, and welcome.

In addition to the participation fee, we ask that artists contribute
to the opening refreshments and sign up for a show job. These will be
discussed in a future e-mail with interested participants. For any art
sales, the Plowhaus will take 25% as its fee.

A preliminary show calendar:

Tuesday June 2nd art drop-off
Wednesday June 3rd - Thursday, June 4th curating/hanging
Saturday, June 6th – Downtown Art Crawl
Saturday, June 20th – Pride Festival Reception

Interested artists should let me know immediately (by Friday, May
15th) if they would like to be part of the celebratory exhibit. We
need 20-25 artists to make this happen.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to participate.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS ART WORKSHOP: Box Ofrendas (Oct. 27)

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS ART WORKSHOP: Box Ofrendas

Saturday, Oct 27
1:00 - 5:00 PM

Plowhaus Artists' Coop
211 South 17th Street, East Nashville
$25 includes all supplies
Facilitated by Erika Johnson

bluegreenchair@gmail.com

An "ofrenda" is an altar, usually built in the home, to honor a departed loved one. We will discuss the traditional elements of a Dia de los Muertos altar (or offering), then create small personal shrines to celebrate the lives of those we have lost. The result will be a unique and personal work of art that engages both tradition and individual expression. Participants are encouraged (though not
required) to bring photographs (or photocopies) and other small items that relate to the person they wish to honor. Erika will provide a selection of wooden and metal boxes and a wide array of art supplies, tools, decorative materials and found objects. This workshop is designed for adults, but young people over 12 are welcome to participate with a grown friend or parent.

Here is a link to a useful website about the Day of the Dead and the tradition of building ofrendas:
