TRANSLATION
Curated by Meagan Rust, Richard Harper, and Open Lot
The goal of Translation is to highlight the process of interpretation from textual to visual, and from visual to textual. A dialogue between visual artists and writers, the show will explore how different types of art can influence and interact with each other.
The curators of Translation have selected two poems, a sculpture, and a painting that will be included in the show. Open Lot is currently seeking both writers and visual artists to craft responses to these preselected pieces. Visual artists are asked to create a response or interpretation to one of the written pieces, and writers are asked to create a response or interpretation to one of the visual pieces. All media are welcome to apply. Please limit poetry and prose to 500 words. Multiple submissions are welcome. There is a $10 submission fee for each submission to this show.
The submission deadline is March 19 at 5pm. Selected submissions will be announced Friday, March 26th. The opening reception will be April 16th from 6-9, with an after party following.
Please visit the Open Lot website, http://www.theopenlot.org/Info%20Pages/Submit-Translation.htm, to view our preselected pieces and to submit your work.

Red Carpet
Everyday we encounter signs and signals that tell us where to go and when to wait. Traffic lights and colored lines direct us on the road and architecture guides us through space, while maps and blueprints document these conventions. Red Carpet is a show of spacial or interactive pieces that deal with the most basic kinds of social mediation caused by the space and architecture. All media are welcome to apply.
The submission deadline is Friday, October 9 at 5pm. The show runs Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14 with a reception Friday night from 6-10 pm.
Send a completed application form, a brief description of the proposed project, up to 3 images, and a $15 processing
fee to: Open Lot, 1307 Jewel St, Nashville TN, 37207. Digital submissions may be sent to skyegilkerson@gmail.com

Open Lot Meeting 6/2/09, 7pm at The Greenhouse in Green Hills
Open Lot Meeting 6/2/09, 7pm at The Greenhouse in Green Hills
Renovations begin this week on the future home of Open Lot on 4th Ave. South. New windows, new floors, track lighting, sinks, public bathrooms, etc. will all be put in during the next three weeks. There are still a few private studios available for move-in for July. I would love to know everyone's plans for move-in before July 1st so we can possibly share truck, dolly, etc. to make the whole process go a little faster.
Recently we've been talking about who Open Lot should be working with and how to keep the space and the group sustainable. Now that the space is quickly becoming available for use, let's talk more about the specifics of what we should show and how we should use the space as a public venue. What are the kinds of shows you've heard and read about and thought, "that sounds amazing, but would never fly in Nashville"? Don't forget to keep a look out for exhibition ideas outside of visual art, and please bring others who have ideas or just want to support new kinds of art in Nashville.
See you there,
Jonathan Lisenby

New Open Lot studio space Info + viewing May 4, 2009
The new Open Lot Nashville alternative arts studio space will be available to view Monday, May 4th from 7pm-8pm. The space is still somewhat raw, so it would be great to get feedback on artists' needs/ideas before we start building it out. Everyone is invited whether they plan to utilize the studios & exhibition space or not. Please meet in front of the building at 632 4th Ave. S. Parking is free and directly across the street on 4th Ave.
Open Lot is a new collaborative studio, venue and exhibition space in downtown Nashville, TN. As an exhibition space and venue, we showcase compelling contemporary work that is underrepresented in Nashville. By featuring a diverse cross-section of work, Open Lot simultaneously embraces individual specialization and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Open Lot fosters interdisciplinary collaboration as a studio. We are looking for participants with interest in the arts, communication, and invention of any kind. Open Lot members represent a variety of backgrounds, like architecture, sound engineering, journalism, photography, painting, sculpture, fabrication, and printmaking, just to name a few. By sharing the insights, theories, and techniques of their respective disciplines, studio members gain broader understanding and amass artistic and intellectual tools.
The Open Lot Nashville space is almost ready. The building is organized into three main spaces on two floors: the ground floor exhibition space, the ground floor studios & tools, and the second floor studios. The ground floor is a large, open plan where the exhibition and performance space will be, along with communal tools, worktables, and a large communal work space. The ground floor is subdivided by small, movable walls on casters. These walls allow the space to easily be reconfigured into a larger or smaller exhibition space and add new niches for additional studios, storage, etc. as needed. The second floor houses three 250 sq. ft. large studios, one 185 sq. ft. medium-sized studio, and one 120 sq. ft. small studio. Each of the five studio spaces can be subdivided into smaller studios (or add more wall space for 2-D artists, etc.) if there is demand.
